This very cute sized winnowing device, used to seperate the seed from the husk, was traditionally made in brass, as this one, or split bamboo. Every region in India, while, having slight nuanced differences, follow the same scientific basic shape.

It is a skill taught to every young one, in the kitchen to, learn to shuffle it to separate the seed from the husk, as the lighter particles come to the fore and are dusted off.

This particular delightful piece, is from Andhra and is easily over 70 years old.
