This beautiful copper steamer, is called modak patra, in marathi. Modaks are vegetarian steamed dumplings, filled with melt in the mouth mixture of jaggery/sugar, fresh grated coconut and wrapped in rice flour dough.They are steamed in this special modak patra and eaten with hot ghee poured over them.

The small, handle cum container on the lid is used for filling with water, to allow the covered pot to retain steam and moisture.It is these, little detailed design elements, that make this a classic.

It is made of pure copper, hand beaten, and beautifully crafted to last. The outside surface is hand hammered with small pea shaped dents, to increase longevity and resilience to constant use. It really is a piece of usable art, that would give immense pleasure to handle and cook with.
